Rohypnol Mississippi Aussig: Nothing to Stand By - CD
Have you heard the woodsy classic Mississippi blues sung in Czech? The classical one, played by a black man on the steps of his trailer on an old acoustic guitar, almost imperceptibly swaying his trunk to the rhythm and dropping simple and profound truths of life? That it doesn't exist in Czech and would be ridiculous, maybe even stupid? Yeah, pigeons, you'll have to listen to this recording. Jan Rohan aka Rohypnol Mississippi Aussig doesn't mess around, but at the same time he doesn't play any J. L. Hooker or Tom Waits. His voice is naturally veiled and a little raspy, he doesn't have to push it by shouting into the pillow. He plays the guitar as well as he sings - without false notes, with good intonation, and his lyrics about life are uncompromisingly believable. His "old man sitting on a park bench" is not Anderson's Aqualung, he is a Czech homeless man - but one that is dangerously close to the English one of 50 years ago. Rohypnul has risen to the top of the scene and it's worth a listen, folks!
