In the Heart of the Submarine War
This gripping novel about the German navy during the so-called submarine war describes the harsh reality of combat in its rawest form.
The author depicts the hopeless situation of German sailors who, sooner or later, had to sacrifice their lives for the wartime adventure in the Atlantic. He focuses on the crew of the Albatros, one of five Atlantic minesweepers, and vividly portrays their psychological struggles under extremely difficult conditions. The hero is a young sailor who, after training, joins the navy. As a crew member of the Albatros, he acutely experiences all the horrors of battle, as well as the brief moments of rest upon returning to the mainland. He witnesses the destruction of the fleet, is seriously injured himself, and after recovering, transfers to the submarine fleet tasked with destroying Allied convoys, with little hope of survival.
