Shermans are conquering Europe
The average lifespan of a new tank officer in Normandy in 1944 was estimated at less than two weeks. David Render was a fresh graduate of Sandhurst Military Academy when he was sent to France to join a veteran tank unit that had been fighting the "Desert Rats" (7. tank division) in North Africa. When he joined a squadron of Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry five days after the invasion, the battle-hardened men he was to command did not expect him to last long. However, during the following weeks of fierce fighting, in which more than ninety percent of his fellow tank commanders became casualties, his ability to emerge from countless combat engagements unscathed belied these expectations. This earned him the nickname "The Inevitable Mr. Render" in his squadron.
David Render tells his remarkable story, covering all the major events of the last year of the Second World War in Western Europe, from the Normandy invasion to the fall of Germany. It's a story of survival, camaraderie and the ability to stand up and be seen as a leader in battle.
