SHIP GDAŃSK: Days of beginnings
Gdańsk, 1860. A young Johanna Berendová knocks penitently on the door of a patrician house on Długa Street. A few months earlier, she had run away with a talented young pianist – and now she wants to return to the bosom of her family. But a shock awaits her when she learns that her beloved father has died in the meantime. Her domineering older brother, Theodor, is now the head of the merchant house. The only way out of her desperate situation seems to be marriage to the good-natured, much older shipbuilder, Berthold Forster. The young woman is fascinated by his work and urges him to establish a shipyard. Johanna takes on more and more of its management – much to the displeasure of Pawel, Forster's son from his first marriage...
