Sophie's Choice
She could never shake the suffocating knowledge that there was a time in her life when she played a role as a participant in a planned crime." On the floor of a Brooklyn boarding house in the summer of 1947, there is no indication yet that civilization has shaken off the tragedy inflicted by the greatest war in history. Here, the clingy Nathan falls deeper into the grip of paranoia, while his lover Sophie is tormented by her experiences as a Polish Catholic in the Auschwitz concentration camp, where sadistic SS men forced her to make a fateful decision. What does their neighbour Stingo, who is working on his first novel in the hotel while recovering from the naivety of his youth, learn about their pathological relationship and the horrors of the Holocaust? After Auschwitz, is it still possible to live normally, to laugh, to believe in a greater good, or to write poetry? And how else to defeat the moral dilemmas spawned by the Evil that did not come from above, but is born in our world and is the responsibility of specific people? Based on the book, which according to Le Monde is one of the 100 most important novels of the 20th century, the film was made in 1982 by director Alan J. Pakula's film of the same name with Meryl Streep (Sophie; Oscar-winning actor), Kevin Kline (Nathan) and Peter MacNicol (Stingo). The work in the form of an opera (2002) was set to music by the British composer Nicolas Maw. the length of the recording: 30 hours 51 minutes interpreter: Martin Stránský
