The story takes place on the French whaling ship Saint Enoch, which leaves port under the command of Captain Bourcart Le Havre and sails for the Pacific. Old superstitious cooper Jean-Marie Cabidoulin is also taking part in this voyage as his last, completely demoralising the crew with his gloomy, wondrous tales—and especially with his conviction that the ship will meet a giant sea monster that will destroy it.
The whaling ship has mixed success in its hunt, during which mysterious events become even more mysterious, perhaps the work of natural phenomena, perhaps the work of sea monsters…
But will Jean-Marie Cabidoulin's premonition come true?
