Stories of the Iron Curtain

How to escape from the wired "peace camp"? The renowned columnist comments on forty examples of the regime's repression.

The tightly guarded borders of communist Czechoslovakia with Germany and Austria became the scene of thousands of tragedies in which brave people tried to escape from the "camp of peace and socialism" surrounded by barbed wire. The Czech Wall of Death and Its Creator, How Men Turned into Frogs, To Merge with the Tree Trunk, and Slovak Ikaros - the titles of the book's chapters sound rather surreal in the current context, but in the years 1948-1989 they referred to a mercilessly bloody reality and confirmed the extraordinary ingenuity of people longing for a life of freedom.
The renowned columnist comments on forty examples of the repression of the regime, which according to contemporary statistics managed to thwart more than 90 percent of the escapes "over the hills", and presents them as a memento for a time that has already begun to suffer from memory loss even on the political level.
"The collective consciousness of our society has not yet matured to the point where heroic acts are admired for their exemplary nature (...), so we are still waiting for the 'legalisation' of heroism, and we are ripe for it with inexcusable delay." - from the foreword by Jaroslav Hutka
