Both his father and grandfather had built them, and young Robert Louis was to follow them in their work. But he was not deterred from his dream of becoming a writer, and pursued it with the same tenacity as his grandfather Robert, who did the near impossible - building a lighthouse on the treacherous, wave-washed cliff of Bell Rock, far from the Scottish coast. But the marine element played an important role in Stevenson's work, in his books and in his life. He often travelled by sea, and fate eventually took him through the waves to the island of Samoa, where he died in 1894 at the age of only forty-four.
