For centuries, vampires roamed the world freely, until the Greys appeared out of nowhere and wiped out half their population in a single night. The survivors found refuge in the last vampire city, Svitupád, where the rules are clear: weak blood for the poor, the best for the nobility. And no one is ever allowed to leave the city.

The servant Sam has had enough of these rules, as well as washing the chamber pots of the aristocratic tyrants and their superiority. When the first lord's son is murdered and Sam stumbles upon the only clue to the truth about his death, she seizes the opportunity to blackmail her way into the upper class and to better quality blood. She soon joins the Leeches, a group of rebellious servants who make life a living hell for the worst of the worst. Before long, she finds herself alongside a sorcerer who can do without magic thanks to the art of deduction, a deadly werewolf assassin, and a countess who knows everyone's secrets in the city.

There's just one catch. What began as a murder investigation has led to the uncovering of a vast conspiracy by the ruling elite. Sam must therefore uncover the truth before Svitupád claims another victim. If she doesn't get herself killed, she might just achieve eternal life.
