Surgeon

You can't run away from yourself! A new novel by a popular Czech author.

"I can be neither straight nor crooked. My life has broken in two and I no longer expect any strong rope to secure me," reflects MUDr. Hynek Grábl, a surgeon at the border hospital, who no longer hopes that his life will ever turn out better.
The career of a top expert at a Prague clinic ended prematurely because of a single alcohol-related crash, and now not only he, but also his eternally dissatisfied wife and teenage children have to bear the consequences. Neither life nor financial accounts show a favourable balance sheet and all the symptoms of a mid-life crisis are on the horizon for tomorrow. However, Grábl's efforts to find a way out are more like a roller coaster ride and often end in a hangover. Will a beloved profession, a lover or a new chance to return to an interesting operation help him grow in his career?
In and out of the operating theatre, it is sometimes difficult to know who is playing what game, who is the winner and who is the loser, and where the road ahead will lead. Hynk G. often have no choice but to trust that they won't sink to the bottom.

– excerpt from the book

"Let's close it, shall we?" I'm thinking out loud.
"What else?" says Havlat. "It'll show up on histology."
While we're sewing, the circulator is preparing the formaldehyde into which the tissue will be loaded and sent to the lab. Andrea is administering the sutures, but she's still inspecting the piece of tissue.
"Andrea, let's go." Havlat huffs at her when he sees her hands go slack.
"Doctor, do you know what I'm dreaming about? It's like there are strings attached," he's gonna turn the unit.
"What strings?" Vincz gets right to it.
We watch it again, then Havlat takes a scalpel and tries to cut into it. A lattice structure through and through. And we're home!
"Oh, really, a forgotten tampon from a previous operation." I'm looking at Havlat.
He's going to cut into it twice more just to be sure, but there's no doubt.
