Tales from one pocket and another

They were based on the Black Chronicle cases. They were first published in book form in 1929 and have been reissued many times since. They also inspired sound and television adaptations and film versions. They have elements of a classic detective story, but Čapek's way of telling the story is original. He is characterised by his insight, sense of humour and ability to empathise with the human soul. The author is a brilliant connoisseur of human nature and has an exceptional way with modern Czech, which has not aged at all since the time the work was written.
