Tales from the Wallachian Kingdom

Read by Boleslav Polívka

Folk tales from the Wallachian region, recorded by Benes Metod Kulda, were retold by one of the greatest Czech poets Jan Skácel in the first half of the 1980s. Fairy tales from Wallachia are clear, honest, uncompromising, yet they do not lack charm and mystery.

Skácel preserved the immediacy of Kulda's narrative and enriched it with beautiful language and a large dose of humour. Who else should tell these tales from the Wallachian kingdom but the Wallachian king himself, Bolek Polívka. When reading, he emphasized humour in fairy tales wherever it is only hinted at and developed it to its fullest in joking situations. At the same time, Polívka tells the story with tenderness and fatherly love. His Wallachian Fairy Tales have a chance to go down in history as an example of an ideal relaxed interpretation of a fairy tale text. Skácel's eight captivating stories rang out gently, delicately and with imagination (Stupid John, Glass top, Magician, About four brothers, Poor blacksmith, Shoes, hat and cloak, Three white roses, Little lamb with a smell).
