Testimony about life in the DPRK
Everything you wanted to know about life in the DPRK (and totalitarianism in general) but were afraid to ask...
From the dozens of interviews she conducted with refugees from North Korea, the Czech Korean scholar selected seven that most eloquently capture various aspects of everyday life in the world's most closed country. Nina Špitálníková also played the role of interviewer during the recording of the audiobook version of her work. Among the selected respondents, performed by a seven-member ensemble of actors, we find a college student and a retiree, a hustler and a feminist - all of them shared their experiences with the empathetic interviewer, memories, feelings and fears, when listening to which our people just shake their heads in disbelief. The situation in the DPRK surpasses even the wildest dystopian visions, and the most horrifying part of their depiction is the fact that we are not dealing with fiction, but with the terrifying reality of the 21st century.
The book, which brings rare testimonies of people who escaped from the North Korean regime, won the Magnesia Litera Prize for journalism in 2021.

They wrote about the book:
"Some of the details can seem tragicomic, the way the social organism revels in despotism, and are proof that human freedom is the most powerful motive for human action and social action even in the space beyond the barbed wire."
- Vít Kremlička, Reflex.cz

"The book certainly impresses with the horror of North Korean totalitarianism, before which even Orwell's fiction pales, but what is extraordinary is the personal and human level of what the individual refugees say about their perception of the reality there."
- Magnesia Litera 2021
