The case of the sneaky blackmailer

The blackmailer's letter, placed in a ghostly box, a human skull, appeared one day in 1640 on the desk of the Mayor of Budějovice. Who wanted to remind him of the sad event ten years ago, when Florián Kudrna lost his beloved first wife and his little daughter mysteriously disappeared? But the news is to be very expensive... After the Lord Mayor is mugged, an ancient secret takes on a new dimension - is the blackmailer and the attacker one and the same person? Eventually, several people in the Mayor's circle are suspected, but before their guilt or innocence can be proven, some of them die under mysterious circumstances. The investigation is complicated by a huge fire in the town in the summer of 1641. Only then, in the underground torture chamber of the Budějovice town hall, will the whole truth come out... They call me Kat. I have - in fact, I had - my own birth name too, but it remained somewhere on the path of my life, trampled into the dust, dissolved in the rain and scattered by the hooves of horses or the wheels of carts. They call me Kat. It's a good name. It stirs up a lot of feelings. Respect. Fear. Respect before the law. It is the last name, with the sound of which people often go to eternity and repeat it before the throne of the Most High.
