The Castle as a Technical Problem
This collection presents papers delivered at the end of 2007 at the colloquium “The Castle as a Technical Problem. Technologies and Forms of Construction of Mediaeval Fortified Settlements”, which took place at the Moravian Museum in Brno with the participation of archaeologists, architects, anthropologists, and conservationists. In addition to articles dedicated to the structural form and historical development, the contributions also focus on some details of daily life in mediaeval fortified settlements, diet composition, and weaponry. The largest section is devoted to Skály Castle (Štarkov) near Jimramov, which is presented in a broader context. However, papers on other noble residences, such as Cimburk Castle near Městečko Trnávky, Újezd near Kunštát, the Silesian Ostrava Castle, and the Nosislav fortress, are also included.
