The city sleeps

It is an original poem written years ago by Zdeněk Svěrák for his son Jan for a school performance that actually took place, and Mr Svěrák attended it at school.

The poem is about the different professions that people do while we sleep. Children will learn that while they dream their dreams and the city sleeps – the cats come out and make dates. Our health is guarded by Dr. Panek, who is ready to help us even at night. To be safe, precious things are guarded by watchmen so that we have good buns in the morning – baked overnight by bakers… etc. At the same time, children will learn about different „ night“ professions.

The text has never been published in book form. Only in 2016 was this text set to music by Jaroslav Uhlíř as part of the Hour of Singing.
