The Colour of Money - DVD
Oscar-winning Paul Newman stars in an American film set in a billiards gambling environment. Winning money is better than making it.
Aged billiards champion Eddie Felson has long since given up his gambling career and turned to the liquor trade. One day, however, he comes across a talented young man, Vincent, who excels at billiards. He manages to convince Vincent and his girlfriend Carmen to start making money together gambling in small-town gambling halls. At the same time, cynical Eddie teaches Vincent how to improve his game and, most importantly, how to deceive with his body. Vincent is also forced to learn humility, because it is in their interest to lose the game sometimes because of the betting. The relationship between teacher and pupil eventually turns into a competitive battle between two billiard masters and, above all, two peculiar personalities.
This drama by director Martin Scorsese is a loose sequel to the 1961 film The Hustler. The character of "Fast" Eddie Felson was reprised by his original character Paul Newman after many years. Newman was nominated for an Oscar both times for this role, but it wasn't until Scorsese's film that he was able to turn it into a nomination. The director gave the second lead role to Tom Cruise, who had risen to the top of popularity in the same year with the drama Top Gun.
