The Conquest of the Aztec Empire

The conquest of the Aztec Empire is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating stories in the history of the New World. At the time the Spanish landed on the Mexican coast, the power of the Aztecs was at its zenith.
The conquerors rightly considered Tenochtitlan the “most glittering jewel of the Valley of Mexico”; in many respects, the Aztec metropolis surpassed the vast majority of European cities. The conquistadors were driven by a desire for gold, power, and glory; they were primarily enticed by the fabled wealth of the mysterious empire, about which fantastic tales were told. Hernán Cortés, who led the expedition, had a reputation as a capable and immensely ambitious man. However, the conquest of the Aztec empire required more than just courage, cunning, and ruthlessness.
The main role was played primarily by his Native American allies, who were pursuing their own interests. It is no wonder that the path to victory was paved with defeats and failures. During the Noche Triste (Night of Sorrows), hundreds of conquistadors perished, while the rest of the expedition, including its commander, were saved only by a hasty escape from Tenochtitlan. Nevertheless, Cortés was determined to succeed at any cost. For nearly six months, he diligently gathered soldiers, allies, equipment, and supplies for the next campaign. Then, in the hope of vanquishing his foe, he descended once more into the Valley of Mexico. The siege of the Aztec metropolis lasted more than two months. In the end, the defenders succumbed, and the “most glittering jewel of the Valley of Mexico” disappeared under a layer of rubble and ash.
The conquest of the Aztec Empire was undoubtedly a significant milestone in Spanish colonial expansion, which laid the foundations for Spanish power in Central America for the next 300 years.
