Izzy is seventeen and half-orphaned. She lives with foster parents and the circumstances of her father's death are more than tragic. The unhappy girl finds a welcome distraction when she discovers an old diary in the local abandoned psychiatric sanatorium. In it, she finds a window into her own past. – Clara Cartwright was just eighteen in 1929. She is torn between her authoritarian parents and her love for an Italian immigrant. When she refuses an arranged marriage, her father has her committed to a private asylum for the mentally ill… Although Izzy must grapple with the difficulties of a new start in life, Clara's story keeps her tied to the distant past. If Clara really wasn't mentally ill, could that somehow explain Izzy's own trauma? The search for Clara's fate forces Izzy to reconsider her own life decisions – with shocking consequences.
