Intrigue in Beroun: What secrets does the royal town hold?
The royal scribe Jiří Adam of Dobronín is approached by one of the Old Town's burgherwomen, who shyly confesses that her sister, Adelheida, married the executioner of Beroun years ago. However, the executioner recently died. Shortly thereafter, Adelheida disappears, and no one knows where she might be. The local reeve, however, refuses to concern himself with the affairs of an executioner's family. Jiří Adam has no choice but to travel with his assistant, the bachelor Petr, to the royal town of Beroun and begin to unravel an old story of love and betrayal.
