The Face of Water - DVD

In a classified American government laboratory, experiments are being conducted on a strange amphibious monster found in the Amazon. Very little is known about it – the indigenous people worshipped it as a god, it can breathe both in air and underwater, it resembles a human, and it is considered a dangerous creature. The ambitious government agent Richard Strickland (Michael Shannon) keeps it in the laboratory and studies it ruthlessly. He treats it more like biological material than a living being. His experiments disregard whether the subject of his research will survive.
Elisa (Sally Hawkins), a mute cleaner, works in the same laboratory. When she happens to encounter the imprisoned creature, she manages to establish a form of communication that requires no words at all. Gestures and emotions are enough for them. Elisa does not see it as a dangerous monster; above all, she senses its terrible loneliness. A strong bond forms between it and the perceptive Elisa. When further brutal experiments become imminent, Elisa realises it is time to escape together. And since we are in the 1960s, nothing is as simple as it first seems.
