The General Went to His Death - 2nd Edition
It is a unique story from the Second World War: The execution of the prime minister of a country occupied by the Germans! The Hitlerites carried it out in June 1942 at the shooting range in Kobylisy, Prague. Unlike the Stalinists, the Nazis, certain of their victory, publicly boasted about such murders! Alois Eliáš did not fight with conventional weapons like the Three Kings—Morávek, Mašín, and Balabán. His weapons were military cunning, pretence, and delay, buying time and striving to disrupt the enemy's plans. Under difficult conditions, he maintained radio and courier contact with his commander-in-chief, President Beneš in London, and also used his prior acquaintance with Protector Neurath from the peace negotiations in Geneva. He fought many a 'rearguard' battle with his adversary K. H. Frank. He was aware that he was facing death. He helped others to emigrate, but he himself refused an offer to emigrate, saying there were already enough generals there. It was not until the day Protector Heydrich replaced Neurath at the end of September 1941 that he was arrested and 'sentenced' to death by a German tribunal composed of Gestapo members. He died a hero. He refused a blindfold and stared intently at his murderers.
