Maria Florkowska, prisoner number 16671 and avid chess player
After the German invasion of Poland, she was imprisoned with her parents and siblings in the Warsaw ghetto, where she joined the anti-Nazi resistance. After the Gestapo came upon them, she and her family were taken to the Auschwitz camp. During the selection, she desperately clutches a chess piece in her hand, the last thing left from her former life, which unexpectedly saves her from instant death. The sadistic camp leader thinks that chess games with a young girl might be a welcome distraction for his bored guards. Maria has to play for her life, but at the same time she is plotting her own plan.
