The fate of an industrial family against the backdrop of the First World War
Marie and Paul Melzer enjoy family life, but their happiness doesn't last long. The First World War broke out and men enlisted for the front. As the heir of an industrial family, Paul is initially exempt from military duty because he is needed at home as a specialist in the factory. But then he, too, gets a draft order - on the very day that Marie gives birth to their twins. However, Marie will not shy away from any obstacle. He soon realises that the Melzer textile factory is in a bad way and starts fighting to preserve his family's heritage. Her two sisters-in-law Kitty and Elisabeth also need her help. But later he receives the bad news that Paul has fallen into captivity. And soon after, his friend, the elegant Ernst von Klippstein, appears and increasingly seeks her proximity...
