When the price of sin is too high. The first volume of the legendary historical mysteries featuring Brother Cadfael.
After a life of varied adventures, the worldly-wise Brother Cadfael has taken refuge in the monastery at Shrewbury, where he is a gardener and is particularly proud of his herb garden. The year is 1137 and the Prior decides to acquire the remains of the Welsh martyr Winifred for the Abbey. Brother Cadfael travels with the group to Gwytherin to interpret the negotiations as a native Welshman. On arrival, however, they find that the attempt to transport the relics is met with resistance from the local people, led by Grand Duke Rhisiart. He is also murdered immediately afterwards. Some claim that Winifred herself has pierced it with a mysterious arrow, but Cadfael suspects that the bow was gripped by a mortal hand, so he sets out to investigate.
