The Seven Deadly Sins (3DVD) - DVD

Pride
Dante Alighieri described pride as the worst of all sins, for it is the sin of Satan himself. While both the Bible and the Greek philosopher Socrates condemned pride, the ancient Romans and Vikings made it the greatest virtue. Although pride is considered the cause of Satan's fall, the most famous story about the fallen angel's fate is not found in the Bible. So where can we find the roots of this sin?

Envy
The medieval philosopher and saint Thomas Aquinas stated that those guilty of the sin of envy rejoice in the misfortune of others. Dante Alighieri described the envious as sinners whose punishment was to have their eyes sewn shut, for they delighted in the suffering of others. Envy was and still is the root cause of murders, revolutions, and the fall of entire empires. Is it possible that in today's modern world, envy has transformed from a sin into a virtue?

Gluttony
Although the Bible does not explicitly mention the sin of gluttony or intemperance, as early as the 4th century, Christians believed that overeating could lead them to hell. In the Dark Ages, theologians believed there were a total of seven ways people could commit the sin of gluttony, including overeating or indulgence. In the Divine Comedy, Dante depicts sinners in hell being forced to eat toads and other vermin. Intemperance is considered the cause of obesity and alcoholism, and all available means have been and are being used to combat this sin.

Lust
Christianity has always considered pleasure a sin, whereas in ancient Greece and Rome it was celebrated. However, history has revealed many surprises, including the orgies of Gnostic Christians, Puritan laws forbidding carnal love, and exorcists who battled for human souls with a lustful demon named Asmodeus. Modern scientists are convinced that pleasure or sensuality is determined more by our genetic makeup than by free will.

Wrath
Wrath is the sin that kills. The prophet Moses suffered from fits of rage. Spartan warriors would meditate before battle to rid themselves of anger. In the Divine Comedy, Dante Alighieri reserved the fifth of the nine circles of hell for the wrathful, where they were to tear each other's limbs apart for eternity. Demonologists claim that wrath is actually a state in which the human body is possessed by the demon Amon. However, modern scientists studying the human brain are convinced they have found the emotion of anger in the brain's core, called the amygdala. So, is wrath demonic or purely chemical in origin?

Greed
The Bible condemns greed as a sin in the tenth commandment, which says: “Thou shalt not covet.” Greed was considered shameful even in the biblical times of Moses. Yet it was at the birth of mighty empires and was also the cause of their downfall. Although all wise men from Aristotle to Jesus railed against this sin, in the 18th century, the economist Adam Smith theorised that capitalism itself is essentially based on greed.

Sloth
Medieval theologians were of the opinion that sloth could lead a person to hell. Some scientists, however, believe that sloth may have actually been the medieval diagnosis for clinical depression. So is it a sin or a disease?
