The third mandel of sonnets
Where did the artist of the written, spoken and sung word Miloň Čepelka take us in his Third Mandel of Sonnets? Uncharacteristically for him, for example to the Mediterranean island of Corfu - he recently joined the long line of its enchanted conquerors - but above all (and very typically) to the lands of the soul, heart... and body.
The superficial eye might label this collection as blasphemous, resigned or bitter. Yes, we also find such tones in it. But as on the whole Earth, where even the bleak whiteness of the northern regions is graced with an aurora borealis, The nooks and crannies of its Mandelas also offer us a wide variety of flavours, smells, shades, observations on the sensuality of women and the senselessness of human actions... And above all, masterful work and wordplay, which allows the author to work his magic with mood and tone. If we help ourselves with a comparison from the realm of paintings, the same pastel colours can be used to create a lovely landscape as well as an expressionistic scream (or shout) by Edvard Munch or Christian Rohlfs. For Miloni Čepelka, willing lines and a pen will suffice.
And one more feature comes to the fore in my judgment. Older age is often disparagingly referred to as "second childhood". However, a smirk is not always appropriate. After all, what is a greater adventure than seeing the world through a child's eyes? And if a person, having overcome the middle-age rheum, rediscovers this ability in himself and adds to it a hard-won reconciliation, then he can write a sonnet about a child's gaze.
Three Mandelas, that's forty-five sonnets, in football mathematics, halftime. Let's wish the author - and ourselves - that there will be at least enough of them for the whole game and the overtime. Let's let ourselves be conquered sometimes (by shot words), other times wash over (with waves of emotion), then just wind it up again, awakened by a bold rhyme) and let us reserve the Mandelas of Milona Čepelka - including those, that are yet to come - a hospitable and semi-shaded place in the library, on your bedside table or in your purse full of other necessities.
