The Way of Light
Beyond the walls of this prison, no laws apply. The facility, in reality a concentration camp, lies closer in time and space than we might find comfortable – it is located in the heart of modern-day Ukraine.
Fear, humiliation, and helplessness reign here. The prisoners' bodies bear the marks of wounds, burns, and fractures, and their souls are crushed by the cold-blooded cruelty of their jailers, who seek to break their will and strip them of their humanity and personal pride. This is no longer about the quality of life, but about bare survival, about preserving one's sanity on the brink of madness, about holding on to at least a semblance of humanity amidst utterly inhuman conditions. In this place, faith, forgiveness, and hatred take on a whole new meaning.
For its author, journalist Stanislav Aseyev, the book The Torture Camp on Paradise Street became his path to survival. It is his open, emotional, and profound testimony about life in a hell that raises more questions than it answers, because after the experience of “Isolation”, the life of everyone who has been through it is forever divided into a “before” and an “after”.
