In 1872, when Leopold Katz, a student, discovered an ancient manuscript with Czech chants in the attic of a rectory in the South Bohemian town of Jistebnice, he probably had no idea what a treasure he was holding. Today we usually think of the Hussite chorale Who Are God's Warriors (the whole world knows this tune from Smetana's symphonic poems Tábor and Blaník from the cycle My Country). In reality, however, the manuscript is primarily a book of liturgical chants in Czech for the Mass and for the prayer of the Office of the Hours. The obvious goal of this bold project was to make the liturgy available to a wide range of believers in their own language. The creators mainly tried to translate Latin chants into the Czech language, but often they also started to create their own hymns. Very valuable is among others. a record of the Easter liturgy which, thanks to detailed instructions, gives us an insight into Hussite worship practice. There are still a number of unanswered questions and mysteries surrounding the manuscript of Jastebnik. The present recording by the internationally renowned Tiburtina Ensemble, however, reveals the veil of mystery and conveys the beauty of the singing itself in the performance of clear female voices. "How beautifully my favourite Latin choral pieces sounded in Old Czech! " says Barbora Kabátková. "The Jistebnice Canon was a discovery for me and I believe it will be for the listeners as well. ”
Tiburtina Ensemble with their voices rang out a unique Czech manuscript from the 15th century
