The Clapper
Jan Tleskač's childhood in a mysterious story from the world of Jaroslav Foglar
Jan Tleskač grows up in the Rváčov orphanage in Stínadla. His only memento of his parents is a metal Hedgehog in a Cage puzzle, containing a locket with a portrait of his mother. The boy must fight not only a gang of local youths, but also the ruthless Warden and a mysterious oddball known as Ksicht. However, the small Jan also has loyal friends among the boys, Bert Komour and Vojta Vont. With their help, will he discover who his father was and what secret the Hedgehog in a Cage holds?
David Jan Žák
David Jan Žák lives with his wife Lenka, four-year-old daughter Anežka, and their cat Mazlík in a small wooden house in Šumava. He spends his weekends, holidays and free time in a caravan deep in the forests of the Novohradské Mountains. He enjoys reading comics, drawing Native Americans, and sitting by the stream watching trout. He has published seven poetry collections to date; his poems have been published in several languages, and the Parisian publisher Gallimard included them in the Anthology of 20th Century Czech Poetry. He has written three books for adult readers, of which the novel Návrat Krále Šumavy (The Return of the King of Šumava) became an instant bestseller upon its release. The Disappearance of Edwin Linda is his first book for young adults.
Jaroslav Foglar
Writer, editor-in-chief of the magazines Mladý hlasatel, Junák, and Vpřed, a prominent methodologist, and the long-time scout leader of the 2nd Prague troop. He offered his experience, ideas, and programme tips to others through magazines and later through books that were part story, part methodological handbook, such as Kronika Ztracené stopy (Chronicle of the Lost Trail) and Náš oddíl (Our Troop). His first short story, Vítězství (Victory), was published in Skaut Junák as early as December 1923. Ten years later, he published the novel Boj o první místo (The Fight for First Place) in serial form in the magazine of the same name. This was quickly followed by the books Hoši od Bobří řeky (The Boys from the Beaver River), Přístav volá (The Port Is Calling) and two dozen others. These, along with many short stories and comics, led by the Rychlé šípy (Rapid Arrows), became essential reading for several generations of young people. His legacy, including copyrights, is managed by the Jaroslav Foglar Scout Foundation.
