To be German is to be Lutheran
German Protestants after the Patent of Toleration are among the lesser-explored topics in the history of the Czech lands. The author fills this gap by researching two northern Bohemian border regions, focusing on the establishment of Protestant congregations in the 19th century, the expansion of the church's activities at the beginning of the 20th century, the complex position of German Protestants and the diverse range of their activities during the interwar period in Czechoslovakia, the infiltration of Nazi ideology into the church environment in the 1930s, the decline of church life during the Second World War, the demise of the church as a result of the expulsion of the German population from Czechoslovakia, and their spiritual and material legacy after 1945. The book describes all this within a broader geographical context, including close ties to neighbouring Saxony. The work is based on primary sources from Czech and foreign archives.
