Raccoon City: a remote mountain community suddenly plagued by a series of brutal murders in the surrounding forests. Bizarre reports begin to spread, describing attacks by vicious creatures, part human... part not. The victims have apparently been eaten. At the epicentre of the deaths stands the dark, secluded mansion of the mysterious Umbrella Corporation. For years, Umbrella has been working here unnoticed, conducting supposedly harmless genetic research.

A special tactical and rescue unit, S.T.A.R.S., is assigned to investigate these strange events. This unusual paramilitary group boasts a diverse range of specialists, including the likeable Chris Redfield, former thief Jill Valentine, marksman Barry Burton, and the team's enigmatic commander, Albert Wesker. Along with the other members of S.T.A.R.S., they have good reason to believe they are ready for anything.

But when the S.T.A.R.S. unit breaks into the long-sealed mansion, a horror beyond their worst nightmares is unleashed. They come face-to-face with creatures that defy the laws of life and death – the consequences of forbidden experiments gone horribly wrong. On top of it all, a huge, insidious conspiracy is at play, one that will see S.T.A.R.S. betrayed from within, just to ensure the world never learns Umbrella's secrets. And if anyone survives... they might just envy the dead.
