Victor Hugo: Les Miserables

This romantic tale of a former galley boy who strikes it rich and helps his friends is revisited by new generations of readers who, along with Hugo's characters, experience one of the most beautiful stories of suffering and love ever written. So let us retrace the adventures of Jean Valjean and his eternal shadow Javert, the fate-haunted Fantine and her little Cossette, the noble Mario and the wily Thénardier. The fact that the novel is set in the romantic scenery of old Paris in the 1830s, in the corners of narrow streets, behind the mysterious walls of monasteries and cemeteries, and even in the underground sewers of Paris, adds to its charm.
