The Emigrants I.
The 1st book includes the novels The Emigrants and The Immigrants from the tetralogy about the fates of Swedish emigrants in the mid-19th century. At the forefront of this work's rich gallery of characters and figures is the strong and self-confident Karl Oskar Nilsson, who, from the age of sixteen, has never doubted that he alone can and must decide his own fate and that of his family, and his beautiful wife Kristina. For all the emigrants, it is above all a rebellion against oppression, poverty, and hopelessness. It is the story of those who, full of life, leave the land of their ancestors and certainties to realise their vision of a free and just life in a new, distant, and unknown environment. The author emphasises the human values that make life more bearable. The diverse fates of simple, ordinary people and their struggles with life, both in their old homeland and on their way to America, as well as the building of a new existence, are set within the flow of a narrative that lacks neither suspense nor drama, tragedy nor happiness, and is imbued with humanity.
The entire tetralogy was published gradually between 1949 and 1959.
