Who wants to kill the Emperor
Murders in the Time of Emperor Rudolf II
Lukáš Trobl of Květnice, a clerk at the provincial court, happens to overhear a conversation between two unknown men in a remote tavern, The Mad Mare. He hears them say that “the emperor must be killed.” Lukáš isn’t sure if he was just drunk and dreaming, but he decides to inform his uncle, the court councillor Maxmilián Trobl, just in case. On his uncle's orders, he begins to search for the two strangers to find out if there really is an assassination plot against Rudolf II. He is aided in his investigation by Konrád, a one-eyed war veteran; Adriana, a Hungarian prostitute; and the court astronomer, Johannes Kepler. At first, it seems Lukáš merely overheard a drunken joke, but when he is almost killed himself and is only saved by Albrecht von Wallenstein, a captain in the imperial army, he realises the situation is serious. Especially when he can't even trust the imperial chamberlain, Philipp Lang, or the emperor's mistress, Kateřina Stradová. Could those two also have an interest in Rudolf's death?
