Having spent a century in cryogenic hibernation, Captain John “Black Jack” Geary has returned home to find the war between the Alliance and the Syndicate Worlds still raging. The legendary hero is promoted to Fleet Admiral, even though the Alliance council is unsure whether Geary is plotting a military coup. Geary has never fought for glory. For him, his new rank simply means he has the standing required to negotiate with the Syndics, who have suffered terrible losses in the war and may finally be willing to make peace. Geary resolutely leads the fleet back into Syndicate territory. As an experienced commander, he knows that surrender never comes easily. But even as he prepares to face his enemy, he must constantly be aware of a much greater threat: an alien race lurking beyond the far side of Syndicate territory.
