Writing Underground

A collection of studies by literary historian and editor Martin Machovec, written over the last two decades (2000-2018), presents a number of facets of thinking about the phenomenon of the underground. In his individual studies he deals mainly with underground literature from the I. M. Jirous and the rock group The Plastic People of the Universe, but it also pays attention to the broader context of this literature - its predecessors from the 1950s (Egon Bondy and Ivo Vodseďálek's circle), its role in the Charter 77 community, its links to the Anglo-American environment, or its musical and stage realisations and the way in which these texts were disseminated in samizdat.
