We: An antiutopia that warns of a totalitarian society and the loss of individuality

People = numbers, feelings forbidden...
A famous anti-utopia that depicts life in a totalitarian society where people are numbers and the day is divided into minutes. There's no room for feelings, but two numbers of the opposite sex are out of control. Mathematician D-503 lives a happy life in a perfect world called the Unified State. People marked with numbers wear uniforms, their day is scheduled by the minute, never venture beyond the Green Wall, bounding space, in which they are allowed to reside, and only indulge in intimate relations in so-called "sex days". Children raised together are just more numbers working for the welfare of the United State. The company operates on the principles of mathematics, efficiency and logic. There is no room for emotion, individuality and imagination. But when one day D-503 meets the female number I-330, his world is shaken to its foundations and then nothing is the same... We is the first anti-utopia to depict life in totalitarian societies. Zamyatin wrote it in 1920, twenty-nine years before Orwell's 1984.
The book is still relevant in its warning against ideological but also technological totalitarianism. It is not surprising that it could not be published in the USSR until 1987. We, newly translated by Rudolf Medek Prize winner Jakub Šedivý.
