About Maitake

Maitake (Grifola frondosa) is translated as dancing mushroom - this name comes from the reactions of the foragers who danced with joy when they found this amazing and highly valued mushroom. Maitake is a sickly parasitic fungus with an amniotic fluid that takes the form of a large cluster. It is made up of a leg with up to many hundreds of conjoined hats. Maitake or lupine contains many biologically active substances including beta-glucans, glycoproteins, grifolic acid, amino acids, etc. From a Chinese medicine perspective, Maitake supports the centre, strengthens the Pi (Spleen) and Wei (Stomach) and thus can purify the body and harmonize the metabolism. It is also sometimes called the "preventive mushroom for old age". We grow our Maitake on a substrate that is a mixture of sawdust, organic wheat bran, fresh soil, cane sugar and natural gypsum.
