Chaga is a pearl of Siberian and Asian nature. Like many other mushrooms, TCM has a thousand-year tradition of use. The Chinese court is said to have used chaga as early as 2000 years ago. Chaga, a.k.a. Slanted Rust, is an irregularly shaped fungus with a distinctive, typically black colouration caused by the concentration of the pigment melanin. The original homeland of the chaga is Asia and the Russian taiga. Here it is also a widely used and well-known mushroom since the 16th century. Chaga revels in harsh conditions, where it parasitizes birch trunks, soaking up their energy.

Digestibility and processing

Mushrooms must be processed in such a way that our digestive system can digest them. The coating of fungal cells is chitin, which we cannot digest. So if we want to make mushrooms, resp. from their cells, to extract the maximum amount of active substances, we have to process them in such a way as to disrupt their chitin coating. In the case of extracts, this is done by gentle extraction with hot water; in the case of some mushrooms, a second extraction with alcohol is necessary, i.e. a double extraction. In the case of powders, the dried mushroom fruit is ground using a special shellbroken method that disintegrates the cells for higher digestibility.
