Otrivin Nasal Spray for the treatment of nasal congestion 1 mg/ml, 10 ml
Otrivin is a medicinal product containing the active substance xylometazoline hydrochloride, which constricts the blood vessels in the nasal mucosa and thus quickly relieves a stuffy nose. The effect takes effect within two minutes and lasts up to twelve hours. Otrivin is used in acute or allergic rhinitis, sinusitis and also in otitis media to reduce swelling in the Eustachian tube area. It is also suitable for use before a professional examination of the nose. The 0.5 mg/ml variant is for children aged 1 to 11 years, while the 1 mg/ml variant is for adults and adolescents aged 12 years and above. In addition, the product contains moisturizing and soothing ingredients that help prevent dryness and irritation of the nasal mucosa.
Dosage
For children aged 1 to 5 years, it is recommended to administer 1 injection into each nostril once or twice a day. Children aged 6 to 11 years can take 1 to 2 injections in each nostril two to three times a day. Adults and children 12 years of age and older apply 2 to 4 drops or 1 injection into each nostril one to three times daily. An interval of 8 to 10 hours should be observed between doses and a total of 3 applications per day should not be exceeded.
Contraindications
Do not use Otrivin if you are allergic to xylometazoline or any other ingredient in this product. The product is not suitable if you suffer from glaucoma with narrow angle glaucoma, dry rhinitis (rhinitis sicca) or have undergone surgery of the horseshoe of the brain by the nasal route. It should also not be used if you are taking monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors or have taken them within the last two weeks, and also if you are taking tricyclic or tetracyclic antidepressants. Otrivin is not intended for use in pregnancy.
Notice
Consult your physician before using Otrivin, if you suffer from high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, increased thyroid activity, enlarged prostate or pheochromocytoma. Do not use the product for more than 7 days for adults and 5 days for children, as longer use risks worsening symptoms and developing dependence on the drops. In susceptible persons, Otrivin may cause insomnia, dizziness, heart palpitations, or an increase in blood pressure. It is not intended for application to the eyes or mouth. For hygiene reasons, each bottle should only be used by one person to prevent transmission of infection.
Storage
Keep the product out of the reach of children. The spray variant with the Khone pump (thumb operated from the side) should be stored at temperatures up to 30 °C, while the other variants do not require any special storage conditions. Once opened, the product is usable until the end of the shelf life indicated on the packaging. Do not use it after the expiry date marked with the abbreviation "EXP". Do not dispose of unused medicine in the garbage, but return it to the pharmacy to ensure that medicines are disposed of safely.
