HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, is a pathogen, that attacks and suppresses the immune system by that it primarily affects white blood cells, while AIDS is the clinical stage of HIV infection, which can occur several years after infection, when there is a significant decrease in the effectiveness of the immune system. The test can be performed at any time of the day, and antibodies can be produced from 23 to 90 days after exposure. The result can be read within 10 minutes.

The Prima Home HIV 1/2 self-test 1 can specifically detect the presence of anti-HIV 1 and/or 2 antibodies in a blood sample. If the blood drop contains anti-HIV antibodies, the test detects them and a red line appears in the evaluation window next to the T marker. If the sample does not contain these antibodies, no coloured line will appear in the evaluation window next to the T marker. The absence of a coloured line in the evaluation window of the T marker is also possible when the level of circulating antibodies is below the detection limit, leading to false negative results, especially in the case of HIV-1 group O. Prima Home HIV 1/2 self-test 1 offers 99.6% accuracy and 99.7% specificity.
