I deliberated for months between the MacBook M4 Air and M4 Pro watching and reading an endless amount of reviews online. In the end I chose the Air for the following reasons:
- The Air offered a big screen without the weight of the 16" Pro.It's super light at only 1.5Kg.
- The 15" screen is plenty capable for my purposes, photo editing, browsing and mixing with DJ controller. When I'm at my desk, its connected to a dock and large external monitor so I'm not interested in the Pro Motion 120Hz or Nanotexture features of the Pro. The screen is still perfectly capable for watching movies even if it is older technology.
- The fan-less, sealed design means I never have to worry about dust and dirt build-up within the MacBook, no moving parts = one less potential point of failure.
- The basic M4 chip in the Air is still an exceptionally high performer compared to the M4 Pro and Max chips which would be wasted on me for my purposes.It works perfectly with Rekordbox which was one of my main uses.
- I went with max 32GB of memory to account for any eventuality as I plan to keep this MacBook for 5-7 years.
- The 2TB storage allows me to fit EVERYTHING from the last 25 years locally without needing an external drive.It's also synced to iCloud for redundancy.
- I have replaced a 10-year old Windows 10 mid-tower desktop computer which took up a lot of space with a MacBook I can now take anyway.
This was a pricey purchase but I know I now have a fully capable device to last me for the next 7 years and it ticks all the boxes. Very happy.

The M4 chip is fast, snappy, and handling everything I throw at it so far. I haven't noticed any performance throttling yet.
