The description states the grilling surface material is ceramic, but it's actually cast aluminium with a non-stick coating. The hotplate has an embedded heating coil, which heats the whole surface quickly, but I find it difficult to regulate the temperature. When you lift the lid, the temperature drops sharply and the meat barely cooks, but with the lid closed it gets so hot that the meat burns. I'll give it another chance, maybe I'll get the hang of it ;-)

Part of the grill surface is smooth and part is ribbed.
The plate with the heating element can be removed and washed separately.
