The history of the Varela brothers' family business dates back to the very beginning of the 20th century. When Spanish immigrant José Varela Blanco built the first sugar cane mill in the small Panamanian town of Pesé in 1908, he had no rum-making ambitions. It was his sons who came up with this brilliant idea in the 1930s. As a result, Abuelo 12 is now one of the most popular rums, known among enthusiasts for its excellent value for money. Abuelo 12 is the flagship of Varela Hermanos. The tropical climate, extra-gentle distillation of their own sugar cane, and careful selection of barrels are the ingredients that gave birth to this fabulous mature Abuelo 12 rum. It rested for a full 12 years in American white oak barrels, previously home to fine whisky, and the result is dark, elegant, and slightly smoky. This is why it has won several gold medals in international competitions.
The fantastic aroma and taste of Abuelo 12
The aroma of Abuelo 12 is fruity and spicy with a slight smoky hint. Imagine mango, banana, vanilla, coconut, and a freshly opened box of quality cigars. On the palate, it's velvety smooth and pleasantly sweet thanks to the higher sugar content, with notes of banana, honey, vanilla, and a pinch of cinnamon. The 12-year-old Abuelo 12 is ideal for sipping slowly with friends. It's best enjoyed neat or on the rocks, but there are no limits to experimentation. No one will mind if you try it with a dash of cola for a slightly decadent twist.
