Replaceable pins are small screws that are found on the surface of flat pedals, often referred to as "platforms". Their main purpose is to ensure that the sole of the shoe grips the pedal. They prevent the foot from slipping off the pedal, which increases the confidence and efficiency of pedalling, especially on rough terrain, in wet conditions or when riding fast. The ability to replace the pins means that if one of them gets damaged, for example by hitting a rock, it can be easily unscrewed and replaced with a new one. This eliminates the need to replace the entire pedal, which is more economical and practical. This feature also allows the level of grip to be adjusted. Some cyclists prefer longer and sharper pins for maximum security, while others may opt for shorter ones for easier adjustment of the foot position on the pedal while riding.
