Displacement
Displacement, or volume, determines how much load a paddleboard can carry. Shorter boards make up for their displacement with thickness and width, whereas narrow, thin, long boards can have a lower displacement. A family paddleboard (load over 130kg) requires a displacement of at least 320L to avoid sinking and creating drag when paddling. To quickly calculate the minimum displacement for your build, multiply your weight by 3. You can use the following table to get a rough idea of what your paddleboard's displacement should be. However, as a general rule, a slightly larger displacement is better than a smaller one.| Displacement | Ideal Weight | Recommended for |
|---|---|---|
| 100–200L | up to 40kg | Children |
| 200–240L | approx. 50kg | Juniors and women |
| 240–280L | up to 80kg | Women and lighter men |
| 280–320L | over 80kg | Heavier men |
| over 320L | over 130kg | Family paddleboards |
