The Explorers & Pirates 5–6 player extension in a fresh look (2025 redesign) lets you play the Catan expansion with 5 or 6 players. The extension does not change the game rules in any way; it simply opens the game up to more players, which may slightly increase the playing time. There are only minor differences during gameplay, with 2 players owning ship 1 and 2 taking actions within a single turn. You cannot play this extension on its own – it requires the Catan base game, the 5–6 player base game extension, and the Explorers & Pirates expansion. You can easily combine this current edition with products released since 2003 (plastic components), as only the graphics on the tiles and cards differ. Combining it with earlier editions from 1995–2002 featuring wooden components requires additional material.
