Elephant memory is legendary - after many years, an elephant can remember where to find water or recognise the elephants it grew up with. Elephants recognize their own reflection and are one of the few animals that have this ability. Males are much larger than female elephants. A baby elephant spends 20 to 22 months in its mother's body before it is born. Female elephants have the longest gestation period of any mammal. An elephant herd often consists of ten to twelve animals and is led by an experienced female. Elephants are known for their thick skin. However, their skin is so sensitive that they can even burn. This is why elephants so often throw several layers of mud on top of each other. This pleasant "cooling wrap" also helps them fight the heat.
