The microbiome - a key organ for the balance and health of the body
- The human gut is inhabited by a huge population of beneficial cultures called the microbiome. They play an indispensable role in the functioning of the whole organism, which is made up of about 100 trillion bacteria and yeasts (10 times more than the number of cells in the human body). Because of the size and importance of the microbiome, it is spoken of as a separate organ about the size of the liver and just as important. There are around 400 species of bacteria in the microbiome, and the balance of these is very important.
- Due to stress, strain, illness or an inappropriate lifestyle, an imbalance, dysbiosis, can occur in which bacteria with potentially harmful effects overgrow in the gut. Dysbiosis can set in when taking antibiotics, with excessive alcohol consumption, low fiber intake or excessive intake of industrially processed sugar.
